The Minister of Communication Michelle Rowland said ” the government is focused on a positive solution for issue of national concern and the issue of the harms that are being caused to young people through Social Media is right up the top of the list. We know that Social Media offers many benefits for Australians, including young people, as a way of keeping connected, of finding their tribe, of making sure that young people may be isolated by geography. But we also know that brings many harms. The Prime Minister Said the government may not be able to protect every harm for every child, every time that it occurs, we can make a difference and that’s why we’re taking strong action on a number of fronts.
We’re seeking support from the national cabinet to approve 16 as the minimum age for accessing Social Media in Australia. And as the prime minister mentioned, it’s very important to have privacy protection in place here. This is a complex area, but this is one that we are determined to get right.
